The dial for bake/broil/off was off. The dial for temp was left to whatever last temp I used as always- so the oven is "off". I noticed earlier I had it open and the coil was orange in a single little spot while it cooled. 5 hours later I saw a spark, opened it and it looked like a welding torch. I turned the temp dial to off and it went away. Wtf is going on here?

Is your oven by any chance manufactured by Ferrari?

Left over oil and grease.

Time to clean the oven.

You'd be surprised how many fires happen because of dirty ovens.

Its overpriced and takes too long to warm up... so we might be on track.

Hah, no I have an apartment so it's probably some 20 year old oven. Im hoping I dont piss off the leasing office considering my washer and dryer and have been replaced. Heating unit needs to be replaced and now the oven. "Yes I'd like to renew my lease" "we dont"

the coil looks clean. The way it was sparking seemed more electrical than fuel driven. I think it's shorting out though I'd much rather it just need a good cleaning.

Not sure why, but new coil was about $40 on Amazon when food dropped on ours and it like burnt a hole in it.

Ah. Good luck!

The oven in my home is 10 years old. Works good. Barely use it.

I had an oven do this behind me once. Not a fun situation. What's more horrifying was that it was when one of my best friends' parents made me home made (they're very italian) pizza. While not on purpose, I've only been at their house a couple times since then, and we never went into the kitchen. It's kind of a running joke that I have to avoid their kitchen or the house will burn down....

It's really just caused by food corroding the element, and the element starts to burn away. All you can really do is cut power to the oven (unplug it or turn off the breaker for it), wait for the burning to stop, and replace the element.

Even worse, how many oven fires happen because people try to clean them!

Bummer... well, perks of renting an apartment- looks like leasing has an oven to replace :D

When you're not using something, it's always best to turn it all the way off. You may not be the next person using it, and you don't know what they'll be doing, and they'll expect things to be completely off.
Good safety practices are good for many reasons. My brother once lost a bunch of hair because he went to start the barbecue not knowing that I'd left the taps on and just shut off the propane at the tank...

They'll probably just replace the element, that's all you should really need replaced. Takes a minute to do. Pull the old one out, push the new one in....

sounds also like a safety tip of "make sure the gas nozzles are off before igniting" but I get where you're coming from. The leasing office will be notified and a new element will go in I'm sure.

Elements are manufactured to have consistent resistance through out their length. If that changes, you get this. Replace the element. Sears repair parts probably has the part if you can translate the model number into their system.
